This past weekend, our artistic gymnasts continued to participate in international competitions and returned home with medals from two events. From September 1-3, our athletes competed in the FIG World Challenge Cup held in Mersin, Türkiye. Azerbaijan was represented by Mansum Safarov and Nikita Simonov in the men's events, and Nazanin Teymurova and Samira Gahramanova in the women's events.
Our experienced team member Nikita Simonov lived up to expectations by winning a gold medal (14.900 points) in the rings final. Nazanin, who qualified for two finals in the vault and floor exercise, placed 5th in both categories in the final round. She also ranked 12th on the balance beam. Samira Gahramanova finished 11th on beam and 12th in the floor exercise. Mansum Safarov placed 15th on the horizontal bar and 21st in floor exercise.
During the same dates, the international tournament “RomGym Trophy 2023” was held in Bucharest, Romania. Our only representative at this event, Ivan Tikhonov, reached the finals on pommel horse and parallel bars, securing a bronze medal on pommel horse.
From September 8-10, another FIG World Challenge Cup took place in Szombathely, Hungary. Azerbaijan was represented by national team member Mansum Safarov, who competed in two apparatuses. He finished 15th on the horizontal bar (12.400 points) and 17th in the floor exercise (13.250 points) during the qualification rounds.
