Today, the “AGF Trophy” international rhythmic gymnastics tournament officially began in our capital. During the opening ceremony, Secretary General of the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation, Nurlana Mammadzade, stated that this is the third time Azerbaijan has hosted this competition.
She noted that the AGF Trophy international tournament had previously been successfully held in Azerbaijan in 2018 and 2019.
Mammadzade also emphasized that, unlike previous editions, this year’s tournament includes participation from both junior and senior gymnasts representing 14 countries.
She added that the recent successes in gymnastics are a result of the attention given by the state to the development of sports in Azerbaijan and the work carried out under the leadership of the country’s First Vice-President and President of the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation, Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva.
For reference, a total of 119 gymnasts from 14 countries are competing in the “AGF Trophy” tournament, with Azerbaijan represented by 38 gymnasts.
In the senior individual category, our experienced gymnast Zohra Aghamirova—participant of the Tokyo Summer Olympic Games, winner and silver medalist of the 34th International Grand Prix, four-time champion of the Islamic Solidarity Games, and double silver medalist of the Summer Universiade—will be among those competing. She will be joined by Alina Gozelova, winner of the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games, along with several promising young gymnasts who have achieved success in international competitions.
In the senior group competition, our team will feature Gullu Aghalarzada, Leman Alimuradova, Kamilla Aliyeva, Zeynab Hummatova, Yelizaveta Luzan, and Darya Sorokina—all accomplished athletes, including a World Championship bronze medalist, three-time European Championship bronze medalists, and winners and silver medalists of the 5th Islamic Solidarity Games.
Additionally, Azerbaijan will be represented by two junior group teams in the group routines category.
