The World Cup stage in Baku, which is of great importance for artistic gymnastics, has concluded. From March 7 to 10, spectators witnessed fascinating, thrilling, and professional performances by the world gymnastics stars. With a record number of countries (67 countries) participating, the competition was even more intense as the event served as a qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Our country was represented by 5 male and 1 female athlete in the Cup. Unfortunately, our experienced athlete Nikita Simonov, who was one of our main medal hopes after winning a gold medal in Cottbus, Germany, could not achieve the desired result in front of the home crowd.
Our athlete finished the rings routine in 9th place in the qualification round. Meanwhile, Nazanin Teymurova, a young member of our team who started competing among seniors last year, secured 13th place in the vault event.
Ivan Tikhonov placed 17th in the parallel bars. The members of our national team, Rasul Ahmadzade and Mensum Safarov, who started competing in the senior category this year, presented their routines in various events. Unfortunately, our representatives did not qualify for the final stage.
The athletes who collected the highest execution scores in the qualification round were awarded the AGF Trophy. The trophy for the men's competition was awarded to our national team athlete Ivan Tikhonov, while the women's competition trophy was claimed by the Chinese gymnast Siu Du.
